Freeport United Soccer Club is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers and governed according to the guidelines set forth by Soccer Maine, the governing body for the sport in the state.
Our Mission
- Provide Freeport area children the opportunity to play soccer competitively against teams from similar soccer clubs in neighboring towns, in the larger Casco Bay and Mid-Coast regions, and in the State of Maine;
- Support the development of skillful and intelligent soccer players, to foster joy in playing soccer, and to encourage players to perform to the best of their abilities
- Nurture an interest in, and an appreciation for, soccer among youth players, their families and the community at large;
- Promote fairness, sportsmanship, social, emotional, and personal development through club soccer;
- Promote peer and family participation in the game of soccer.
Coaching Staff
While our coaches are all volunteers, many of them have coached and/or refereed for years. Others have played at the high school or college levels. Our coaches undergo background checks prior to coaching and every two years thereafter. They also participate in Safesport and Concussion Protocol training every year.
Soccer Maine has mandated that Travel team coaches must have the appropriate Grassroots License (or D license if appropriate) for the age group they are coaching.
Coaching License Requirements
U-9,10 – USSF 7v7 In-Person Grassroots License
U-11,12 – USSF 9v9 In-Person Grassroots License
U-13,14 – USSF 11v11 In-Person Grassroots License
Fall Season
Our teams play in Soccer Maine’s most popular league, the Fall Classic League. This league features boys and girls divisions in age groups from Under-9 through Under-14.
- Players will typically train twice a week for 60 – 90 minutes per session.
- The 6 “league games” are typically played on Sundays but may take place on Saturdays as well.
- The players compete in a local soccer tournament over Columbus Day weekend, as well as an end of season tournament or festival.
Spring Season
Our teams play Soccer Maine’s Pine Tree League. The Pine Tree League is a Spring classic league that includes both non-competitive and competitive age groups. This league also features boys and girls divisions in age groups from Under-9 through Under-14.
- Players will typically train once a week for 60 – 90 minutes.
- The 6 “league games” are typically played on Sundays but may take place on Saturdays as well.
- The players will not compete in an end of season tournament or festival. However, individual teams may elect to play in an early summer tournament that may include an additional player expense for tournament registration.
Player Requirements
- 2 years of Rec Soccer with RSU5-RCE or another town equivalent program.
Team Formation
- Teams are formed in each age bracket (U-9 to U-14) for both boys and girls.
- The player’s age as of August 1st is used to determine the appropriate age bracket to roster the team, as determined by Soccer Maine guidelines.
- We seek to increase soccer participation levels by fielding as many teams as possible and by rostering as many players per team as is practical.
- The Club believes that team size is an important factor in player development and subscribes to the guidelines set forth by Soccer Maine. The following are the maximum roster sizes:
- U9 & U10 (7 v 7) 14 players
- U11 & U12 (9 v 9) 16 players
- U13 and up (11 v 11) 18 players
- The Club holds “evaluations” (not to be confused with try-outs) to help place players on the team that best suits their age and ability.
- For age groups U-9 through U-11, each team will be equal in overall skill as determined during the evaluation process.
- U-9 through U-11 teams are competitive, however they play in “non-results” oriented games.
- For age groups U-12 through U-14, each team plays in “results oriented” games.
- Teams are competitive and players are selected based upon their skill level.
- In the event we have multiple U-12, U13 and/or U-14 teams, an A team and B team will be chosen as determined during the evaluation process.
- A Team will play in Division 1 and the B Team will play in Division 2.
- In the event that a given age group has more players than the maximum, but not enough to form another team, evaluation results will determine the “rostered players.” The following are the minimum roster sizes to form a 2nd team:
- U9 & U10 (7 v 7) 9 players
- U11 & U12 (9 v 9) 12 players
- U13 and up (11 v 11) 14 players
- In addition to “rostered” players, coaches may elect to take on up to 5 “training” players. Training players are not guaranteed game playing time but they are welcome to participate in practices in order to develop their skills
- Roster cuts are the last resort. Before getting to that point the Club will attempt to satisfy the desires of each player and their families. Options that will be considered include:
- Fielding additional teams
- Participation as a training player
- Player playing with age level team vs. grade level team (Example a 5th grader – U11, born in October who would be eligible to play for the U10 team based on age)
